10. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Infinity Ward relied on the past to create Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The result of Infinity Ward's work is a campaign that does not necessarily rewrite Call of Duty rules, but it does reinforce them for a new generation.
You'll find the action fast and frantic. Positioning has never been more important. Death comes to those who play the old way. This is not something new that Call of Duty has done before but it's still a lot of fun with amazing visual/audio design. In our Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 reviews, we called the game "brutal and utterly relentless".
9. Call of Duty WW2
Call of Duty: WW2's return to World War II after so many futuristic features and the previous title's journey into space might seem strange, but the game works. The series is brought back to its roots by the reset. The story of the single player suffers in its first half but is mostly successful.
However, it is the multiplayer mode that makes this game stand out. The online shooter is much better without the tech, gadgets, and spacey stuff. When drones and spaceships are taken out of the equation, the game focuses more on reaction and spatial awareness. This is far more rewarding. The new HQ mode is another intriguing addition. It creates a social area similar to Destiny Tower, where players can hang around. Find out more in our Call Of Duty: WW2 evaluation, wherein we claimed that "getting rid the gimmicks makes for a more pure point-and shoot experience".
8. Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 2 is the best Xbox 360 game and one of history's greatest WW2 shooters. Call of Duty 2 ushered in the HD-era of games in 2005 and demonstrated how Xbox Live would become a major part of console gaming. Infinity Ward is a charmingly old school FPS that still captures the essence of what makes it so popular.
Call of Duty 2 was the catalyst for the rapid rise of the series. With a world-trotting campaign, cutting edge visual design and an incredibly tight multiplayer, it is the core of the series. You'll be surprised at how new this classic feels, if it is something you enjoy. And it's also backwards compatible on Xbox One or Xbox Series X. You can read more about it in our Call Of Duty 2 reviews, where we referred to it as "the new father of WW2 shooting games".
7. Call of Duty Modern Warfare
Call of Duty releases a game named the same as a 2007 game, which isn't even a remake. It is instead an exciting reimagining of a series that has been rebuilt from the bottom up. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the 2019 version of the game, is unlike its predecessors. It doesn't feel as if it's a series of disconnected missions that can be shot off back-toback without any thought.
It's as if you were driving the car in a high-speed action film. It looks, sounds, and feels great. It's a shame, because while the Modern Warfare game was a wonderful first step, the two sequels were not nearly as good. In our Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare reviews, we stated that the game was "clearer than its predecessor in terms of its vision and execution".
